Despite being massively backed-up on reviews (I'm in serious need of some free time, I haven't finished 2007!), I'm pretty pleased with 2008 so far compared to the relatively 'meh' 2007.  Its only April and we've already had these:

Mercenary - Architect of Lies
Arsis - We Are the Nightmare
Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine
Martriden - The Unsettling Dark
The Arcane Order - In the Wake of Collisions
Eluveitie - Slania
In Flames - A Sense of Purpose
Thine Eyes Bleed - s/t
Bloodbath - Unblessing the Purity
Belphegor - Bondage Goat Zombie (despite the name  Grin)
Dismember - s/t
To-Mera - Delusions

and probably a few that I forgot, with a number of key releases over the next few months: Kalmah, Opeth, Scar Symmetry, All That Remains, etc etc

How's 2008 shaping up for you?  Anything else in the pipeline that I forgot?

wow !! I don't seem to keep up !!! and I'm not even done with the 2007 albums... I'm pretty busy nowadays with my studies but I'll do my best to get that "Architect of Lies" (being an architect heheeee... and no I'm not being ego or immodest) I can't follow the releases and news !! when I read this I look completely ignorant but on the other hand good that there are sites like this one to keep me up to date ...
well in your own words Wayfaerer "so far so good" it looks like 2008 will be much better than 2007

WARREL DANE HAS A SOLO RECORD?

*ahem* Yes, 2008 has been fantastic so far, Wayf!

Here's my highlights:

Machinae Supremacy - Overworld
Mercenary - Architect of Lies
Zimmer's Hole - When You Were Shouting at the Devil...We were in League with Satan
Ayreon - 01001101
Gamma Ray - Land of the Free Part II

Will be ordering Martriden, Arsis and pretty much everything else on that list soon enough Smiley

I just checked out the Warrel Dane myspace page - he's got some of the guys from Soilwork and Himsa providing the instrumentation.  It's highly enjoyable, kind of like a more straightforward, singer/songwriter version of Nevermore, as you might expect.

So far, Meshuggah's obZen was already a highlight for me.  Also looking forward to new Ihsahn, Eluveitie, and Opeth!

Never been a big Nevermore fan, but I might have to check that out if Himsa and Soilwork are on it as well...  Plus I loved Warrel Dane's work on Behemoth's "The Apostasy" titled 'Inner Sanctum'...  Thanks for the info Blasphemer...

I got to agree with Wayfaerer here.. I had high hopes for 2007, with a lot of interesting releases coming up, but most of them turned out to be just mediocre. And I'm not talking only about metal releases here, the whole year was equally disappointing in all genres. 2008 is already looking a LOT better, I had a list somewhere of anticipated releases but I seem to have lost it... Well, the new Judas Priest release alone should make this year way better than the last one.

Septic Flesh - Communion (March 2008)

from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septic_Flesh

"According to guitarist and composer Christos Antoniou, the release will feature a full orchestra and choir made of 80 musicians and 32 singers." yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees it seems like one of my favorite bands is back in business ... with that orchesteral work I expect it to be SF at their best ... I can't wait to get this album ... shame that At The Gates won't release a new album after their reunion

The New Opeth is good, Kataklysm is good and Sense of Purpose turned out better than I thought it would be.

However, the new Martriden is masterful. Fantastic stuff.

Holographic Universe is the shit. It's working very hard on replacing PBP as my favorite SS album.

It has been a good year so far. I love the new Arsis, The Monolith Deathcult, In Flames, SS, Machinae Supremacy, and probably a bunch of other bands I'm forgetting.

I was extremely disappointed  . . .

Opeth - worship the band, but the newest album doesn't sound right.  I'm hoping it's just experimentation, and that they continue to do so without falling too far from the tree.

I miss Peter and Martin.  Something died in Opeth when Peter left, that's for sure.

In Flames - honestly, I started loosing interest after Clayman.

In Flames and Opeth - both big disappointments from two of the biggest names (arguably for the first time)

What i'm looking forward to 2008 :

Amon Amarth

Swallow the Sun

Enjoying the lastest albums from :

Behemoth

Ahab

Eluvitie

MDB

Swallow the Sun

Need to check out Matriden and The Arcane Order again and give it a few more spins.  I've heard alot in 2008 that was 'ok' but didn't persuade me to click that 'purchase' button in iTunes.

Totally disagree about Opeth, I think this might be one of the best albums they've ever made...  Wayfaerer's review of In Flames 'Sense of Purpose' is dead on my thoughts as well ("March to the Shore" is by far the best track on the album)...  Happy with Meshuggah "ObZen", Belphegor "Bondage Goat Zombie", Eluveitie "Slania", and Keep of Kalessin "Kolossus"...  Disappointed with Warrel Dane "Praises of the War Machine" on the whole, Ihsahn "Angl", and thought Kataklysm could've done better on "Prevail"...

Really looking forward to:

Immortal (if they still plan on releasing the new album before the end of the year)
Satyricon
Shining
Swallow the Sun
Amon Amarth
Scar Symmetry (still haven't heard it)
Bloodbath
Cradle of Filth
Gojira

Reviews coming for:

Children of Bodom - Blooddrunk
Norther - N
Daylight Dies - Lost to the Living
Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Trinacria - Travel Now Journey Infinitely

Still haven't decided on:

Tyr - Land
Deicide - Til Death Do Us Part
Coldworld - Melancholie
Raunchy - Wasteland Discotheque

2007 albums I'm digging that I missed:

Vreid - I Krig
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead
Negura Bunget - Om

My thoughts exactly, been listening to it for nearly a month now, gets better each time!  Just got the new Equilibrium this morning as well, catchy as hell!   Hmmm, now if only I could actually get some more reviews done :\

Communic - OH?
Warrel Dane - Godly.
Kataklysm - Cuch pretty much nailed that one on the head.
Opeth - Mmm.
Testament - Decent, but as a thrash metal force, they're spent

Still got to get my hands on the new SS, Arsis and Eluveitie...I still want my Orphaned Land and Wintersun!!! Cheesy
