FOR THE END OF YEAR BEST OF LISTS, OF COURSE!

And this year it's going to be a hot contest indeed. I could easily expand my Top 10 into a Top 20 with ease...but the Top 5 will be knife-edge close. It'll be tough. But I know what isn't going to be on my list. Systematic Chaos by Dream Theater. They have a reputation for being outstanding prog metal - if your music is outstanding for being tepid, tedious and tired, that is. This was prog metal's year to shine (Threshold, Symphony X, Devin Townsend...) and it was disappointing to hear the genre leaders produce such a dismal record.

Your thoughts?

Ugh, I still have SOOOOO many good discs I haven't reviewed yet, let alone placed them into a top list (which I usually keep up to date pretty well throughout the year).

Same here. The volume of stuff out there is too hard to keep up with this year.

I'm starting to wonder if i've been listening to the same stuff as you guys...but I do love CE taking his role as "critic" seriously...even his top 20 doesn't get a let up!  Tongue

Nightwish, Dark Passion Play - Not great, but acceptable.

Okay Wayfaerer ? I didn't say that every melodic death fan should like this album.. but maybe it deserves one of your awards .. as I recall you have some special awards for this kind of disappointments? maybe the "I can't believe you're the same guys who made This Is Hell" award??

Yeah, I don't know when it became second nature for me to listen for flaws in albums rather than simply enjoying them, but I can't seem to change it now, and it's annoying as hell!

I've just gotten kind of desensitized over time, I guess.  Like when I first started discovering the underground scene, I would be blown away by bands just based on the musicianship / technicality aspect of their music, but nowadays it really has to have some sort of personal meaning for me as well.  So, if anything, I would say my music listening has gotten more personal and less objective.

Also, I've never even heard Mind's Eye, but I will make it a point to check them out!

I'm the same...I don't concern myself with generic music, no matter what genre it is. I'm drawn towards (what I consider to be) classics and groundbreaking stuff, something that is (as Blasphemer said) personally satisfying. I guess I've gotten to the stage where I consider myself a metal "smark" - Wrestling slang for a "smart mark" - someone who knows all the imagery and storylines are fake but suspends his disbelief just enough to enjoy it for what it is. I can enjoy the majesty of a thunderous Emperor track, but there's no way in hell I'm going to take their hedgehog bracelet/corpsepaint/heathen image seriously.

LOL @ "hedgehog bracelet"

Dammit, Eyeless Sentry, you better take their hedgehog bracelets seriously!  Those hedgehogs came from your neck of the woods!

Eh? You mean echidnas! We have a few bands that love their echidna bracelets over here. They are EPIC, just like the Simpson DESERT. Too bad BM bands in Oz have to frolic and look grim in rainforests, grey-colored sweat dripping from their faces as they're doing it...
